Aaaah, don’t you just love the smell of freshly baked goods? The sweeter the better, am I right? Honestly, I could bake all day, just to have a good smelling kitchen! Unfortunately neither my wallet nor my slow metabolism would support that. I might not be able to bake all day at home, but every once in a while I whip out a new recipe or try an old one again. I think baking has become therapy to me at this point. Recently my mother and I changed our lifestyles completely. We’ve been eating a lot of whole-foods, making our own chocolate and sweet treats with as little added sugar as possible, cut out wheat and dairy. My mother isn’t much of a fan of cooking, so I was left with piecing new recipes together and modifying old ones by myself. Honestly, cooking and baking has never been more fun. It is unbelievable what you can create by adding a few ingredients and a handful of spices! I’ve come across combinations, you wouldn’t dream of putting together. And they’re delicious!
For as long as I remember my family has always been very passionate about cooking or baking and I was handed that passion for working in a kitchen as well. I love food. I love eating it, looking at it and creating with it. Cooking to me isn’t just relaxing, but also a way for me to be creative and bold. Flavours, Consistencies, colours, a kitchen is like an edible art studio and a grocery store like an art supplies store. Like an artist, I create something artistic and creative. Like an audience, my results can be enjoyed by others. Cooking is art too, just one works with a completely different medium. For a long time I always wanted to be creative! I tried drawing, painting, crafting, sowing and I liked it, but I never stuck to it. I never practised enough. It was a burden to me, having to practise daily becoming good at art. It always resulted in me thinking I wasn’t creative, when actually I was. I was very creative, just in a different area. Being artistic doesn’t always mean you need a brush and a canvas. No, a plate is my canvas and foods are my art supplies, utensils my brushes.
Before when I was still eating wheat and dairy, baking was simple and basic to me. Of course there are great recipes with both ingredients, but it was only when I no longer could eat these ingredient, that the fun really began. When you take out such big components in a world, where they dominate most recipe basis, it is not only a challenge to find new ways, but it also allows you to become creative with ingredients, you never noticed before. In today’s world it is believed you need at least one of the two ingredients to make anything, truth is that’s so far from right! I recently made chocolate at home and it was better than store bought or I recently made my favourite cookie recipe completely wheat and dairy free. I even found that flavours are stronger that way and I personally enjoy cooking like this a lot more.
Now I’ve been ranting on a lot about food being art and so forth, but what I actually want introduce to you guys is a new segment on this Blog.
